The new base metals incubator launched at Zincor late in 2008 is the first in its industry. Lepharo will identify candidates for training as entrepreneurs in making marketable products from zinc, copper and brass.
Lepharo will produce rainwater goods, expanded zinc anodes, galvanized roofing products and zinc cast products. Candidates are being recruited primarily from disadvantaged groups, although the incubator is open to all. The project is a partnership between Exxaro, Impala Platinum Refineries, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and the South African Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) Technology Centre. It is also being actively supported by the industry bodies for zinc and copper.
Following years of planning, research into target markets and course development, the first 12 candidates began their studies last year. |
