Exxaro’s zinc refinery – the only one of its kind in South Africa – successfully operates a next to a protected wetland site.

Zincor has played a key role in maintaining and protecting the environmental status of the Blesbokspruit site, a wetland area of 1 858 hectares close to the refinery, and the only site in Gauteng listed on the international Ramsar register. In 1996, Ramsar highlighted potential impacts on the site and today, largely through Zincor’s initiatives, the status of the wetland is unchanged.
