What makes Matla special?
- It has the best underground training facilities for high-speed production development and mining in the group
- Its central engineering workshop produced specialist equipment known as a continuous miner for less than the original manufacturer could supply it, as well as the related cable boom
- Matla was the first South African mine to plan and operate total production from continuous miner sections, at a time when this technology was still unproven locally. In May 1981, Matla achieved a monthly record of almost 119 000 tonnes from a continuous miner section in a three-shift cycle. Matla currently holds the world record of 722 586 tonnes mined in one month
- It has a state-of-the-art condition monitoring department, performing oil analysis, vibration analysis and thermography. This department is also able to upload data from remote sites, run diagnostic programmes, interpret the data and advise clients.
