Society for the physically disabled

The Association for the physically disabled project is a registered NPO established in August 1983.  The organisation operates in Sebokeng Zone 18.  It was established after the need for welfare services in the area was identified and the social work programme started in January 1992.  Their main objective is to cater for people with disabilities.  Poverty, lack of formal education, the high unemployment rate and lack of access to essential services were identified as the main problems in this area.

Their objective is to educate, train and assist people with disabilities to utilise their resources and skills to improve their socioeconomic circumstances.   They also motivate people with disabilities and their families to reach levels of self sufficiency and self determination to improve their lives.

The centre caters for product manufacturing, which includes woodwork in the form of furniture, steelwork such as window frames and burglar bars, as well as embroidering tapestries and sewing garments and scatter cushions. In addition, they repair wheelchairs and maintain a half a hectare vegetable garden. The Foundation grant provided for an irrigation system and borehole.
