Eskom Southern region formed a partnership with the provincial Departments of Water Affairs and Forestry, Social Services, Agriculture and Arts and Culture in support of Nomthunzi Child Care Centre, which is based in King William’s Town.

The centre was established in 2002 and officially registered as a non profit organisation with the Department of Social Development in 2003.
The project acquired the Intsika Yesizwe College premises to operate from the Department of Public Works from 2006. The project’s main objectives are to provide services to rehabilitate and integrate street children into family life, to interact with families and provide preventative care. They care for 55 children.

The project is based in Tyusha Village about 18km from King William’s Town on route to Stutterheim. It falls within the boundaries of Buffalo City municipality.
The children at this centre are destitute and live at the centre on a permanent basis. The Foundation grant provided for resources, furniture and educational material that will stimulate the preschool children’s mental and physical development, thereby creating a safe and nurturing living environment.

SA Congress for Early Childhood Education, Port Elizabeth

The South African Congress for Early Childhood Development (SACECD) forum was established in 1993 and registered as an NPO in 1999.  The objective of the congress is to serve as a coordinating structure for preschools. The forum has a membership of 22 preschools that are registered with the Departments of Education, Health; Welfare and Social Development. They organise training and other relevant activities for educators, educator assistants and preschool learners.

They encourage and promote quality education to stimulate learning and creative activities for children and to prepare them for formal education.

The 22 preschools care for 2 600 learners from ages one to five. This initiative to formulate clusters in the Eastern Cape is done through the coordination of the Department of Education, Early Childhood Development section. The Department has invested towards the retraining of all preschool practitioners and the Foundation was requested to be a partner in this initiative by assisting the preschool clusters with much needed educational resources.

They focus on bush clearing, cleaning under the servitude lines, landscaping and installation of irrigation systems. The Foundation supported the project with vegetation management and landscaping equipment, as well as protective clothing.
