Introduction
Eskom Development Foundation (“Foundation”) is a wholly owned subsidiary of, and receives its mandate from Eskom Holdings Limited (“Eskom”). It is an association incorporated on 12 December 1998 under section 21 of the Companies Act. The company registration number is 1998/025196/08. The Foundation began its operations on 1 January 1999.
Mandate
The Foundation is positioned as a vehicle for Eskom to deliver on its corporate social investment (CSI) objectives, to enhance the quality of life in target communities whilst maximising the strategic impact for Eskom.
In executing this mandate, the Foundation leverages the skills and expertise available in the company in providing support to economic and social projects through grants and donations, targeting communities where Eskom implements its “new build” programme and the communities in which it operates, and in broad terms supporting the theme of energy.
Business purpose
The purpose of the Foundation CSI strategy, in support of Eskom business is to assist in supporting an operating environment that is conducive for sustainable business, particularly with regard to Eskom’s new build programme; to enhance relationships with important stakeholders, and in so doing, to continually build the image and reputation of Eskom; and to draw on and leverage the core competency and footprint of the business, to support Eskom in extending its contribution to government’s Accelerated Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (Asgisa). Thereby Eskom contributes meaningfully to the objectives of government as their primary shareholder.
Major services
The Foundation considers development applications for the approval of grants in support of its flagship and national programmes, the development of projects in the economic and social sectors, as well as donations to philanthropic and welfare causes. The donation of assets is also facilitated and accounted for on behalf of Eskom and its subsidiaries. The Foundation reviews its grantmaking strategies annually in accordance with Eskom’s strategic business focus areas.
Profile of customers and target groups
Grants and donations are made to community-based organisations, small and medium enterprises, development agencies and organisations involved in philanthropic work for the development and benefit of the disadvantaged. The primary target groups for grants and donations are women, youth and children, as well as people with disabilities.

Overview
The Foundation operates in the nine provinces of South Africa. Economic and social development managers and advisers employed by Eskom are based in each province to represent the Foundation.
