Beyond 2008 - the way forward

The Foundation has, during the period under review, certainly adapted to strategic CSI by:

  • formalising Eskom’s CSI approach by documented strategy
  • obtaining senior management involvement
  • aligning CSI to Eskom’s core business
  • working in partnerships with other grantmakers
  • signing service level agreements with Eskom divisions to ensure dedicated CSI staff
  • having regular stakeholder consultation, especially in communities surrounding Eskom’s new build programme sites
  • planning an employee volunteer programme for 2008/9
  • ensuring regular reporting
  • ensuring regular monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment with a view to replicate
    successful projects
  • developing best practice guidelines and
  • sharing lessons and insights

Indications from the Department of Environment and Tourism are that the resolution on climate change is a document that will lead to policy making in this area in the short term.  The resolution contains 14 paragraphs outlining how climate change should be dealt with in South Africa.

Overall the resolution appears to be consistent with Eskom’s strategy on climate change. This means therefore that the opportunities provided now by the capacity expansion programme must be optimised to ensure that CSI projects that are supported by the Foundation adhere, as far as possible, to these recommendations, with particular reference to:

  • energy efficiency improvements in industry sectors
  • moving to an energy efficient economy should take due regard of the imperative to create jobs
  • escalate our efforts to encourage efficiency in the consumption of energy, including through the integration of energy-saving technologies into our social programmes and by leading campaigns to encourage environmental and energy-conscious consumer behaviour
  • further integrate climate change considerations with sustainable development strategies, the science and technology agenda, as well as
  • to adapt to the inevitable impacts of climate change, including in the roll-out of basic services, infrastructure planning, agriculture, biodiversity, water resource management and in the
    health sector.
