Solar powered traffic lights

In order to reduce the demand of the traffic lights at the intersection, all the incandescent lamps were replaced by LED lamps. This meant that a smaller solar panel could be used in order to reduce costs. The incandescent lamp consumes 75W whereas an LED lamp consumes 9W. This by itself reduces the demand by approximately 88%.

A small-scale wind turbine was added in January 2008 to complement the solar assisted battery backup system and to evaluate alternative power sources.
