Case study — Enterprise development through preferential procurement

Bamba Logistics is a 100% black-owned transport enterprise based in KwaZulu-Natal. Classified as an SMME, the company services Exxaro KZN Sands by transporting anthracite, the ilmenite stockpile and furnace sludge. It was developed in a collaborative supplier partnership with Exxaro and has created 26 jobs since receiving this contract. These employment opportunities are benefiting local communities where Exxaro operates, ie people from Gobandlovu (Inkosi Dube), Somopho and Empangeni vicinity).

Under the collaborative partnership facilitated by the Exxaro KZN Sands management team, Bamba Logistics has received payments of over R9 million for services rendered since the start of operations in June 2008. Exxaro will extend this approach to other areas and services where existing or new suppliers can be developed to broaden the base of economic empowerment.
