Case study — Securing the talent pipeline

Exxaro currently has 81 professionals-in-training, mainly in the engineering and geology disciplines. There are also professionals-in-training in finance, human resources and supply chain management.

There was a notable performance from Arnot in 2009 — the first year in which this operation participated in the annual professionals-in-training symposium. Each year, ten professionals-in-training are chosen to present at the symposium, discussing the research papers they are investigating as part of the work-experience component of their degrees. Four of Arnot’s professionals-in-training were chosen to present papers at the symposium, with two of these taking second and third places behind the winner from KZN Sands.

For KZN Sands, this was the fourth consecutive year in which one of its professionals-in-training has won the symposium.
